Gasum Oy, the Finnish state-owned energy company, has announced plans to construct a third biogas plant in Sweden, signaling a significant step towards its goal of producing 133 GWh of biomethane from waste streams annually.
The planned facility, located in the southern municipality of Horby, is currently in the planning stage, with no final investment decision (FID) yet. Gasum is actively securing permits and finalizing the land use plan with the municipality, as stated in a press release.
Once operational, the plant will have the capacity to process up to 500,000 tons of various raw materials per year, primarily residual products and agricultural waste. The project has received funding from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's Klimatklivet investment programme and is expected to be operational by the end of 2026.
Gasum is already progressing with two other biogas plants in Sweden. The first, located in Gotene, is scheduled to commence production at the end of 2024. In addition, the company recently initiated onsite work for a second project in Borlange, following a FID in early February this year.
Gasum's broader strategy includes the construction of five plants in Sweden over the coming years, aiming to achieve a renewable gas capacity of 7 TWh per year in the Nordic market by 2027.
