Vestas has entered a conditional agreement with Vattenfall AB and BASF SE to provide turbines for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind projects in the German North Sea, boasting a combined capacity of approximately 1.6 GW.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer will deliver 112 units of its V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbines, with 68 turbines allocated to Nordlicht 1 and 44 turbines to Nordlicht 2. The contract encompasses a comprehensive package that includes a five-year service and warranty agreement, along with a 30-year operational support agreement.
Details of the conditional agreement were disclosed by Vestas last week, though specifics were not initially provided.
Construction for the Nordlicht projects is scheduled to commence in 2026, with installation of Nordlicht 1 turbines planned for 2027 and Nordlicht 2 turbines for 2028. The wind farms are projected to achieve full operational status by 2028.
BASF noted that Vestas' 15-MW turbine currently stands as the most powerful offshore turbine available on the market. Earlier this year, the German chemical group acquired a 49% stake in the Nordlicht offshore wind complex, underscoring its commitment to sustainable energy investments.
In a move to enhance sustainability, half of the turbine towers will feature top sections constructed from low-emission steel, resulting in a significant 16% reduction in the overall carbon footprint of the towers. This low-emission steel is produced through a process that melts steel scrap in an electric arc furnace powered exclusively by wind energy.
