Seabird Ltd, a Dublin-based wave energy technology firm, has announced its intention to construct a 10 MW wave power park in Barbados, aimed at bolstering the island's efforts in green hydrogen research and development.
The company revealed on Monday that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) for the project. Initially, Seabird plans to launch a 2 MW pilot phase, which is projected to expand to a total capacity of at least 10 MW.
“Seabird and BIDC have identified an area where we believe we can harvest a considerable amount of reliable, renewable, clean ocean energy without hindering any of the other industries—including tourism— that are so important to Barbados,” stated Laurent Albert, CEO of Seabird.
Barbados, which heavily relies on imported fossil fuels to meet its energy demands, aims to significantly advance its industrial capabilities in green hydrogen through technological innovation in wave energy, according to Mark Hill, CEO of BIDC.
