Global engineering, construction, and consulting firm Black & Veatch has been entrusted by two Malaysian energy titans to conduct a hydrogen feasibility study in the Southeast Asian nation, the company revealed on Tuesday.
The utility giant Tenaga Nasional Bhd, known as TNB, and the prominent oil and gas company Petronas have enlisted Black & Veatch to validate the findings of their joint feasibility study aimed at advancing hydrogen development in Malaysia. Black & Veatch's role encompasses providing strategic, technical, and commercial insights on various aspects of green hydrogen production, transportation, distribution, and demand.
Jerin Raj, Director of South & Southeast Asia, Taiwan at Black & Veatch, emphasized the importance of securing viable off-takers for green hydrogen, stating, “With Malaysia's abundant renewable resources including solar and hydropower, this feasibility study has the potential to shape the development of a hydrogen economy in Malaysia over the next decade.”
The initiative aligns with Malaysia's Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR), introduced by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) in 2023. Malaysia aims to position itself as a major hydrogen exporter in the Asia Pacific region by 2050, leveraging its rich renewable energy resources, as highlighted by Black & Veatch.
