Azerbaijan to Partner with IRENA on Monitoring Renewable Energy Goals

The incoming presidency of , , has announced a partnership with the International Agency () to monitor progress towards ambitious renewable energy and energy efficiency targets set for 2030.

The goal to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030 was established during the First Global Stocktake concluded in the “UAE Consensus” at COP28.

Azerbaijan's Minister for Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, and IRENA's Director-General, , formalized the collaboration during the Baku Energy Week. They also agreed to host a joint launch event at the pre-COP gathering in Baku ahead of COP29.

Minister Shahbazov highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “Our cooperation with IRENA will contribute to monitoring the energy results of the COP28 consensus and the promotion of countries' actions on renewable energy and energy efficiency by 2030.”

Director-General La Camera emphasized the importance of IRENA's role in monitoring progress towards the goals set at COP28. He stated, “Today's cooperation between COP29 and IRENA will help ensure we have the continuity required to triple renewables and double efficiency by 2030 – from Dubai to Baku and beyond.”

IRENA will lead the establishment of a special annual report series dedicated to monitoring progress towards the renewable energy and energy efficiency targets. These reports, to be published annually from 2024 to 2030, will provide crucial data and projections to inform future COP engagements.
