SSE’s Ferrybridge Battery Storage Project Hits Milestone with Arrival of First Batteries

SSE's 150MW storage project under construction at Ferrybridge has marked a significant achievement as the initial batteries have arrived at the West site.

Scheduled for completion in late 2024, the project is poised to become ' second Battery System (BESS), boasting a capacity three times larger than its operational asset in Salisbury. A total of 136 battery units will be deployed at the site, contributing to a cumulative storage capacity of 300MWh.

According to SSE, once operational, the Ferrybridge facility is expected to supply electricity to nearly a quarter of a million homes for up to two hours during peak demand periods.

, SSE Renewables' Director of Development & Construction for Solar & Battery, expressed enthusiasm regarding the milestone, stating, “We're excited to have reached another significant milestone on our Ferrybridge battery storage project with the arrival of the first batteries on-site.”

Cave-Bigley added, “Ferrybridge will once again be a key location for the UK energy system, providing the flexible electricity storage the country needs to fully utilize its growing renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power.”

Craig Jackson, Project Manager for Ferrybridge BESS at SSE Renewables, highlighted the progress made during the construction phase, stating, “It's great to have the first battery units arriving at the site as we continue to move through the construction phase of the project.”

Jackson further elaborated, “In the coming weeks we'll be working with our construction partners OCU Energy and local contractors to complete the installation of all battery units and a 132kv transformer at the Ferrybridge site.”

Construction at Ferrybridge commenced in August 2023 and is expected to be finalized in late 2024. SSE Renewables is concurrently overseeing the construction of two additional battery storage facilities at Monk Fryston, North Yorkshire (320MW), and Fiddler's Ferry, Warrington (150MW).
