The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is extending its support to Turkmenistan in harnessing the benefits of renewable energy sources, a source within the agency revealed to Trend.
As part of the Central Asia Regional initiative, IRENA has collaborated with government representatives in Turkmenistan on various fronts, including energy planning, regional cooperation on policy support mechanisms, capacity extension with a focus on renewables, and formulation of a national renewable strategy.
Last year, renewable energy sources accounted for a significant portion of the world's commissioned energy capacity, reaching an impressive 83 percent or 295 gigawatts (GW), according to an official insider.
Despite a modest increase in installed renewable capacity in Turkmenistan from 1.2 megawatts (MW) in 2020 to 2.2 MW in 2021, the country is witnessing progress in its renewable energy sector. The source emphasized that renewable power has emerged as the most cost-competitive source of electricity in many regions globally, offering a range of socio-economic benefits from job creation to improved energy access.
IRENA, recognized as the leading global intergovernmental agency for energy transformation, plays a pivotal role in supporting countries in their energy transitions. The agency provides comprehensive data and analyses on technology, innovation, policy, finance, and investment to facilitate the widespread adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy sources.
IRENA's mandate encompasses the promotion of various forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar, and wind energy.
