Spanish renewable energy services provider Texla Renovables has announced a strategic partnership with UK renewables developer Renewco Power to collaborate on the development of electrolysis plants in southern Spain until 2027, with the goal of producing green hydrogen.
According to a press release from Texla Renovables last week, the first project under this partnership will be situated in Cadiz province in Andalusia. It will encompass the establishment of a 60-MW electrolyser, a 150-MW solar photovoltaic plant, and a battery energy storage system of 50 MW/100 MWh.
Texla Renovables highlighted Andalusia's significance in the green hydrogen sector, stating that the region accounts for 27% of green hydrogen projects in Spain, positioning it as an energy hub of global relevance.
Pedro Perejon, business development director at Renewco Power in Spain, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, stating, “[This] important partnership with Texla Renovables to co-develop the production of green hydrogen and derivatives in Spain is part of our existing strategy of Renewco's suite of renewable energy projects, in addition to existing solar, wind and storage projects.”
Roland Bettscheider, founding partner of Texla and project manager, underscored the versatility of hydrogen, noting, “[Hydrogen is key], as it allows you to do the same as natural gas in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way.”
The development of the first electrolysis plant commenced in July 2023, with the companies anticipating the plant to be operational within four years.
