RWE Renewables, a leading developer of renewable energy solutions, has secured a contract to construct a 50MW battery energy storage system in Australia. The Limondale battery project will supply 400 MWh of power to New South Wales under a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement. The project will be constructed alongside RWE's existing Limondale solar farm, taking advantage of the region's existing grid infrastructure.
The project aligns with the state of New South Wales' ambitious plans to replace aging coal-fired power plants with zero-emission energy generation and storage. As part of the state's bipartisan policy, a series of auctions for renewable and storage capacity will take place until 2030.
RWE Renewables Europe and Australia CEO Katja Wünschel said that the company is thrilled to have been awarded the project and is excited to work with the New South Wales government. “This success creates further momentum working towards a sustainable future in our core market Australia. In a renewables world, battery storages are key for a reliable, secure and sustainable electricity supply,” she added.
The Limondale battery project is part of RWE's global efforts to expand its battery portfolio to 3 GW by 2030. RWE has been operating in New South Wales for several years and plans to work closely with local communities to create a technically and environmentally exemplary battery project. The final investment decision is expected to be made within the next 12 months.
