China Launches Massive Solar and Wind Project in Desert, Capable of Powering 1.5 Million Homes

In a remarkable stride towards a greener future, has successfully launched its first and wind project in the vast expanse of its deserts. China Energy, the operating company behind this groundbreaking endeavor, has projected an annual generation of 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours from the first phase alone. The entire project, estimated to cost a whopping 85 billion yuan ($12.28 billion), is set to be an extraordinary undertaking with a total installed capacity of 13 million kilowatts. China's government initiated the desert renewable energy project towards the end of 2021, unveiling an ambitious plan to install a remarkable 100 GW of solar and wind capacity across 19 provinces encompassing arid regions. Experts have pointed out that regions like Ningxia, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia, where this project is situated, will play a critical role in driving the transition towards cleaner energy sources. With abundant wind and solar resources, these areas possess the potential to substantially increase the share of renewable energy in China's power generation. As one analyst highlighted in a report by China Daily, “Ningxia, along with Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, will help the country realize its sustainable energy ambitions and significantly enhance the proportion of clean power in the national energy mix.”
