Enel Green Power Espana, the renewables arm of Spanish utility Endesa SA (BME:ELE), has announced plans to invest approximately EUR 11.5 million (USD 12.5m) in a solar-plus-storage project in the Canary Islands.
The project, which includes the 9.3-MW El Matorral solar farm and a 10.37 MWh battery, received a EUR 5.69 million subsidy from the EU's Next Generation funds, provided through the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy, an implementing agency of the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition.
Located on unoccupied land at Endesa's Barranco de Tirajana thermal power plant on Gran Canaria island, El Matorral will feature 15,000 modules covering approximately 8 hectares (19.8 acres). Endesa anticipates the solar farm to be operational by early 2026.
The project is currently in the permitting phase and, once completed, El Matorral will become the largest solar power plant with battery storage in the Canary Islands.
