Amazon has entered into a new offshore wind power purchase agreement (PPA) with Spanish utility Iberdrola SA for a portion of the 1.4-GW East Anglia THREE project off the UK coast. The agreement, announced by Iberdrola on Wednesday, is for 159 MW of capacity, equivalent to 700 GWh of electricity per year, from the wind park, which is scheduled to start operating in 2026.
The East Anglia THREE project will feature 95 units of 14.7-MW Siemens Gamesa turbines, to be located approximately 69 km off the coast of Suffolk, England. Once operational, it is expected to generate enough electricity to power about 1.3 million British homes. Construction work onshore began in 2022, with offshore work planned to commence later in 2024.
Amazon's latest commitment is in line with its goal to match all the electricity powering its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025. The company has already contracted 54,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola, supporting not only the East Anglia THREE project but also projects in German and US waters.
In addition to the PPA, Amazon and Iberdrola announced the launch of a new program to further transition Iberdrola's operations to the Cloud, leveraging Amazon Web Services Inc (AWS).
“Amazon's latest commitment to renewable energy is a significant step towards their goal of powering their operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025,” said a spokesperson from Iberdrola. “We are excited to continue our partnership with Amazon and support their sustainability goals with our renewable energy projects.”
