Ib Vogt, a solar plant developer, has secured a deal to provide clean energy to AirTrunk, a hyperscale data center company operating in the Asia Pacific region. The agreement, termed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), has been signed under Malaysia's Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP).
As part of the CGPP, which aims to promote renewable energy projects in Malaysia, AirTrunk will procure renewable energy from Ib Vogt's forthcoming 30MW solar farm. Construction of the solar plant is slated to commence in mid-2024.

The CGPP, an initiative overseen by Malaysia's Energy Commission, facilitates businesses' engagement in renewable energy projects through VPPAs. The programme allocates a quota of 800MW of solar energy generation capacity, with developers eligible to apply for up to 30MW capacity with a secured offtaker.
Damien Spillane, Chief Technology Officer of AirTrunk, expressed the company's commitment to sustainability, stating, “Joining forces with Ib Vogt to lead Malaysia's first data centre renewable energy VPPA demonstrates our dedication to pioneer sustainable action in the industry. As we continue to drive digitalisation in Malaysia through the development of our 150MW AirTrunk JHB1 data centre, this initiative marks yet another important step in our roadmap to achieve net zero and decarbonise APJ's electricity grid.”

In addition to its Malaysian venture, AirTrunk has recently announced a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a new solar farm in New South Wales, Australia. Moreover, the company has initiated a renewable energy solution in Hong Kong, aligning data centre electricity consumption with local renewable energy certificates.
