The demand for electrical energy in Spain saw a 1.1% increase in January, according to official data. Renewables played a significant role, generating 52.1% of the total electricity, reaching 12,202 GWh. Notably, wind power emerged as the leading source of generation for the fourth consecutive month, contributing 24.6% to the overall electricity production for January.
Technologies free of CO2 equivalent emissions represented 75.3% of the energy mix for the month, reflecting a substantial commitment to sustainability in Spain's energy sector.
National electricity demand, after adjusting for temperature and work hours, experienced a modest 1.1% increase compared to January of the previous year, reaching an estimated 22,185 GWh in gross terms – a 0.9% growth from January 2023.
In the peninsular electricity system, demand in January increased by 0.9%, with gross demand reaching 20,946 GWh, marking a 0.8% rise from the same month in the previous year. Peninsular renewables contributed almost 54.2% of the total electricity generation, producing 12,089 GWh. Emission-free technologies accounted for an impressive 78.6% of the energy mix.
Wind power continued to lead the peninsular generation structure in January, responsible for 25.6% of the total with a production of 5,701 GWh.
The Balearic Islands experienced a 4.3% increase in electricity demand in January, with monthly demand estimated at 448,532 MWh. The combined cycle dominated generation, contributing 77.4% of the energy produced, while renewable energy without CO2 equivalent emissions increased by 25.2% compared to the previous year, representing 10.1% of the total. The submarine link between the Peninsula and Mallorca covered 27.4% of the Balearic electricity demand.
In the Canary Islands, electrical energy demand rose by 4.8% in January after adjusting for work schedules and temperatures, with gross demand reaching 754,977 MWh – a 4.9% increase from the same month in the previous year. The combined cycle led electricity generation, representing 48.7% of the total, while renewables and emission-free technologies contributed 10.6% to the overall production.
