French renewables company Neoen SA announced on Wednesday the commencement of the construction phase for a 93.9-MW/93.9-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Sweden, with plans for it to be operational by the first quarter of 2025.
Neoen has issued a notice to proceed to Japan's Nidec, entrusting them with the engineering and construction responsibilities. Nidec will also supply the battery containers and inverters from its facilities in France and Italy, respectively.
The lithium-ion battery, named the Isbillen Power Reserve, is poised to become the largest energy storage facility in both Sweden and the Nordics. Situated in the northern county of Vasternorrland, the project aims to provide frequency containment reserve services to transmission system operator Svenska Kraftnat.
Neoen will serve as the long-term operator of the Isbillen Power Reserve, strategically located near its Storen Power Reserve, a 52-MW/52-MWh energy storage project nearing completion.
With a robust pipeline of renewable energy projects in Sweden, including over 400 MW of BESS projects, Neoen continues to strengthen its presence in the country.
