National Grid Renewables has commenced the construction of its groundbreaking 160MW Unbridled Solar project in Henderson and Webster Counties, Kentucky. Set to become the leading producer of clean solar energy in the state upon its anticipated operational debut in 2024, Unbridled Solar marks National Grid Renewables' inaugural venture in Kentucky.
Expressing enthusiasm, Blake Nixon, President of National Grid Renewables, stated, “We're both proud and excited to be constructing the largest solar renewable energy project in the state of Kentucky. Unbridled is our first project within the state and exemplifies our commitment to the clean energy transition and the benefits it provides to rural economies in the form of new tax revenue and jobs throughout America.”

The Unbridled project is not only poised to make a significant environmental impact but also promises substantial economic contributions. Over the initial two decades of operation, it is estimated to generate nearly $42 million in direct economic benefits. This includes the creation of a minimum of 200 jobs, the generation of over $11 million in new tax revenue, and a financial injection exceeding $24 million for local farmers and landowners.
Having already secured a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Big Rivers Electric Corporation, Unbridled Solar is forging ahead with the construction phase in partnership with Wanzek Construction. Bob Berry, President and Chief Executive of Big Rivers Electric Corporation, emphasized the project's significance, stating, “The Unbridled Solar Project will be a new and valuable addition to the diverse power portfolio needed to provide safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to our Member-Owners. This large-scale project also prioritizes our region with solar development that directly benefits the local economy and generates power for the people we serve.”
