Construction activity has commenced for the development of Scotland's largest airport-based solar farm, a joint initiative between Glasgow Airport, energy transition adviser Ikigai Group, and Zestec Renewable Energy. The completion of the project's development phase and subsequent financial close have paved the way for a £18.5 million investment in a 20MW solar plant.
The 40-acre ground-mounted solar farm will be situated on Glasgow Airport-owned land adjacent to Barnsford Road. The project, set to be implemented in phases, aims to cater to the current and future energy demands of the airport and neighboring businesses. Power purchase agreements will enable these entities to access low-cost, green energy. The first phase of construction is expected to conclude in the summer of 2024.
Zestec Renewable Energy will own and operate the solar plant, with ownership held by funds managed by Octopus Energy Generation. Ronald Leitch, Operations Director of Glasgow Airport, highlighted the significance of the solar farm in advancing sustainability goals. “This will advance our plans to decarbonize our own operations while supporting the net zero ambitions of our airport partners and neighbors,” said Leitch.
The initiative also positions the airport to become an energy hub, fostering plans to support zero-emission flight. Following a successful tender process led by Ikigai, Zestec was selected as the preferred partner for the development, covering construction, procurement, and operation of the solar farm.
Toby Smith, Chief Operating Officer of Zestec, expressed excitement about including the solar plant in their portfolio of behind-the-meter solutions. “Our collaboration with the airport and Ikigai aligns perfectly with our goals,” said Smith. The partnership reflects a shared vision for a sustainable future and marks a key milestone in Glasgow Airport's journey towards clean, on-site energy generation.
