renewable energy developer Group has disclosed plans for a groundbreaking green energy project in , named Megaton Moon. The proposal includes a vast hybrid solar and wind generation capacity of 60 GW/190 TWh and an additional 35 GW of electrolysis capacity. The company has submitted an application to Mauritania's Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines for project development, with the intention of making Megaton Moon visible from space.

The phased implementation of the project is anticipated to commence with a pilot stage in operation potentially by 2028, leading to the final stage's completion between 2033 and 2035. Megaton Moon aims to revolutionize the capital city, Nouakchott, and the entire country by providing abundant low-cost green power and desalinated water, fostering local desert farming, green industrial development, and urban expansion.

The project's remarkable scale positions it to produce 4 million tonnes of green annually or 18 million tonnes of green ammonia. GreenGo Energy's CEO, Karsten Nielsen, emphasized that Megaton Moon aligns with ambitious climate action goals, aiming to contribute 1% of the global demand by 2050 to support NetZero initiatives.

Nielsen highlighted Mauritania's advantageous position for green hydrogen production, citing the region's abundant solar and wind resources, expansive flat land, coastal proximity for water access, and operator-friendly fiscal policies. The project's potential to halve production costs compared to Northern Europe adds to its attractiveness. The initiative aligns with the European Commission's recent efforts to support Mauritania's green hydrogen industry.

GreenGo Energy's Megaton Moon joins the ranks of renewable developments in Mauritania, with renewables developer CWP Global progressing on a planned 30-GW green hydrogen initiative in the country. The ambitious projects signal a significant shift toward sustainable energy in the region.
