Spain has surpassed its entire 2022 renewable electricity production in the year to date, with 116,844 gigawatt-hours (GWh) generated by renewable sources compared to 116,695 GWh in the entire previous year, announced Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) on Tuesday.

Favorable weather conditions have played a significant role in this achievement, boosting output from , , and installations. As of November 20, plants, solar, and wind farms have increased their output by 39.4%, 32%, and 2%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

The surge in hydroelectric power in 2023 is particularly notable, given the previous year's exceptionally low rainfall resulting in the lowest hydro power output on record, according to REE.

Renewables now constitute 49.9% of Spain's total electricity production in 2023. The share of renewables in Spain's total electricity production surged to 61.6% in the first 20 days of November. REE highlighted November 3 as a historic day when renewables accounted for an unprecedented 73.3% of the country's total daily electricity production.
