Jordan's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with four companies—Kawar Energy Company, Philadelphia Solar Energy Company, Amarenco MENA Services, and Germany's Enertrag—to conduct feasibility studies aimed at developing green ammonia production capacity of up to 1.5 million tonnes annually in the kingdom.
Under the agreements, Kawar Energy is exploring the establishment of a green ammonia production facility with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes, while Philadelphia Solar Energy Company is considering a plant with a capacity ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 tonnes per year. Amarenco aims to build a facility producing 1 million tonnes of green ammonia, and Enertrag plans to create a site capable of producing 200,000 tonnes.
The MoUs outline a collaborative framework between the government and the private sector to facilitate initial feasibility studies within a year. Upon completion of these studies, the ministry anticipates entering into framework agreements based on the results, leading to final investment agreements for the projects.
Jordan, aiming to be a key player in the regional green hydrogen production, has already achieved a 27% share of renewable energy in its power mix by the end of 2022. Energy Minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh highlighted the country's aspirations, emphasizing the importance of these agreements in advancing green ammonia production capacity.
The latest agreements follow three previously signed MoUs in the green hydrogen production sector, and Al-Kharabsheh announced plans to sign five more agreements with companies interested in green hydrogen production during the COP 28 summit in Dubai later this year.
