Calderdale Wind Farm Plans Largest Wind Turbine Site in England

Calderdale Windfarm Ltd unveiled plans on Monday for the development of the largest wind turbine generation site in England, situated on Walshaw Moor in West Yorkshire. The proposed wind park, spanning up to 302 MW, will feature 65 turbines, ranging in height from 150 to 200 meters, along with a storage facility.

Positioned northeast of Hebden Bridge in the West Yorkshire Pennines, the ambitious project aims to generate electricity capable of supplying nearly 286,500 homes annually. The comprehensive proposal includes an component of up to 150 MW, contributing to the optimization of utilization.

Backed by Worldwide Renewable Energy Global (WWRE), Calderdale Windfarm Ltd plans to submit a full planning application to Calderdale Council regulators in the summer of 2024, as reported by local media. Successful clearance is anticipated to prompt the sale of the majority shareholding in the project vehicle to UK-based companies, investment firms, or pension funds.

Initial funding for the project, accompanied by a GBP-75-million (USD 92.1m/EUR 86.1m) community benefit fund, is secured through the Energy Horizon II Investment Company.

This venture marks one of the first wind project applications in England following the British government's relaxation of construction rules for such projects in September. The development aligns with the country's commitment to expanding renewable energy and underscores the growing importance of in the UK's sustainable energy landscape.
