Danish global biogas producer Nature Energy and energy and fibre network Andel have achieved a groundbreaking milestone, hailed as “world history” by Danish Minister for Industry, Business, and Financial Affairs, Morten Bødskov. The occasion marked the inauguration of the world's first commercially operational Power-to-X plant, combining electrolysis and biological methanation, completed in a record time of one year.
The collaborative venture, initiated in the autumn of 2022, saw an investment of DKK 100 million (€13.4 million) in the biological Power-to-X plant located in Glansager on Als, Denmark. The innovative facility harnesses excess electricity from solar and wind sources through Andel's electrolysis plant, converting it into hydrogen. This hydrogen is then integrated into Nature Energy's methanation plant, where it combines with CO2, yielding e-methane and boosting biogas production while reducing CO2 emissions.
Upon full operational capacity in the spring, the hydrogen output is expected to elevate Nature Energy's green gas production by 12,000 m3 per day. Danish Minister Morten Bødskov, who ceremonially activated the hydrogen flow during the inauguration, emphasized the historic significance of the achievement, citing it as a prime example of collaborative efforts between knowledge institutions and businesses driving the green transition.
The plant's impact extends beyond its technological prowess. Ole Hvelplund, CEO of Nature Energy, highlighted its role as a milestone in the industrial-scale development of green gas, emphasizing the centrality of organic waste and biogas in Denmark's broader green transition.
