EDF Renewables has officially inaugurated the Rivière des Galets solar power plant in Réunion, a significant milestone in the island's ongoing transition to renewable energy. This 4.6 MWp capacity solar facility, located in the “ZAC ECOPARC Le Port” economic and industrial activity zone, has been built on a former “wild” landfill site, offering a sustainable second life for the area. The plant is set to supply clean energy equivalent to the annual consumption of 4,500 individuals, benefiting 14% of the commune of Le Port's population.
The project, awarded through a 2020 Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) tender, became a reality with the crucial support of the Municipality of Le Port and the Urban Community of the West Coast Territory (TCO). EDF Renewables, the developer, also took on the task of site cleanup, removing nearly 2 tonnes of batteries and 1,100 tonnes of waste, all of which were responsibly processed.
Local businesses played a pivotal role in the construction of the facility, securing approximately €2 million in contracts, which not only advanced the project but also fostered regional expertise. Furthermore, a Reunion-based company will oversee plant maintenance throughout its 20-year operational span.
EDF Renewables collaborated with environmental associations and expert offices to enhance biodiversity on the site. This extensive effort involved the transformation of an initially invasive, waste-covered area into a habitat conducive to heritage flora and avifauna. Native palms and shrubs were planted to create a suitable environment for various bird species.
Sofiane Boukebbous, Director of the South-East and Overseas Zone of EDF Renewables, expressed pride in the Rivière des Galets solar power plant's inauguration. He thanked the local communities for their unwavering support throughout the project and emphasized EDF Renewables' commitment to Réunion's development. Boukebbous noted that this project brings the total number of ground-mounted solar power plants operated by EDF Renewables to three on the island. Additionally, EDF Renewables is involved in the renewal of a wind farm in Sainte-Rose, contributing to Réunion's energy transition objectives, particularly in non-interconnected areas with ambitious goals.
Olivier Hoarau, the Mayor of Le Port, expressed his satisfaction with the operational solar power plant. Given Le Port's status as one of the sunniest towns on the island, the Rivière des Galets site was deemed an ideal location for this installation. Hoarau underscored the project's virtues, which align with the town's energy transition objectives, offer a new purpose for the site, and engage local businesses in the plant's operation over the next two decades.
