First-of-its-Kind in Spain: Nedgia Biomethane Plant Harnesses Waste from Controlled Repository

Spain has unveiled its first large-scale production plant, set to eliminate a staggering 17,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The Naturgy group's gas distribution arm, Nedgia, has executed this visionary project, delivering biomethane via a newly constructed 6-kilometer pipeline integrated into the grid.

Situated within the confines of the PreZero Spain Controlled Waste Repository in Els Hostalets de Pierola, the inauguration of this groundbreaking facility took place on October 23. The event witnessed the presence of Regional Minister for Climate Action, Food, and the Rural Agenda, David Mascort, alongside a host of government officials and business leaders.

This innovative initiative represents the largest-scale biomethane injection project to utilize biogas generated from controlled waste repository water. It also stands out as the first project of its kind to secure financing through a long-term private .

The heart of this enterprise beats with the patented WAGABOX® technology from Waga Energy, poised to inject an impressive 70 GWh of renewable gas annually into the Nedgia grid. To put this into perspective, this volume is equivalent to the energy consumption of approximately 14,000 households or the fuel requirements of 200 buses.

Notably, this endeavor has garnered significant support from the , which has provided a substantial of €2.4 million, channeling funds toward the development of innovative technologies aimed at curbing emissions.

Commenting on the landmark project, Nedgia CEO Raúl Suárez emphasized its pivotal role in positioning gas networks and biomethane at the forefront of the ongoing energy transition. He underscored the venture's economic, social, and environmental sustainability, emphasizing the significance of localized gas production, which reduces dependency on foreign imports and bolsters energy self-sufficiency.
