Sembcorp Industries announced that its subsidiary, Sembcorp Utilities, has entered into an agreement with Indonesian state-owned utility company PT PLN (Persero) to investigate the feasibility of green hydrogen production in Indonesia. The venture aims to produce as much as 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using renewable energy sourced within Indonesia, as stated in a regulatory filing by Sembcorp.
Sembcorp CEO Wong Kim Yin highlighted the significance of the collaboration, noting, “We aim to co-create a sustainable low-carbon hydrogen supply chain in the ASEAN region, enriching the energy landscape for both Indonesia and Singapore.”
This news comes on the heels of a prior announcement that Singapore had conditionally approved the import of 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from Vietnam by Sembcorp Utilities. The electricity will be transported via subsea cables extending over 1,000 km (620 miles).
Additionally, during the Singapore International Energy Week, Tan See Leng, Singapore's second minister for trade & industry, disclosed that Sembcorp Utilities would be collaborating with Petrovietnam Technical Services to develop offshore wind and other energy capacities. These are aimed at boosting the export of electricity to Singapore.
The conditional approvals granted by Singapore's Energy and Markets Authority (EMA) are an endorsement of a project's initial technical and commercial feasibility.
The new venture into green hydrogen production marks another ambitious step for Sembcorp in diversifying energy sources and advancing sustainable solutions within the ASEAN region.
