India’s NLC Limited Launches Subsidiary NIGEL to Bolster Renewable Energy Expansion

Limited, a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, has recently unveiled a wholly-owned subsidiary, NLC India Green Energy Limited (NIGEL). This subsidiary has been established with a clear mission: to spearhead and accelerate all initiatives in the rapidly evolving Indian energy landscape.

NIGEL's inaugural board meeting, held just recently, marked a pivotal moment in this endeavor. During the meeting, the company ratified key managerial appointments and adopted its distinct logo, setting the stage for its ambitious journey.

Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman of NIGEL, expressed his enthusiasm for this new venture and emphasized its pivotal role in rapidly expanding renewable energy generation capacity in the country. “With a primary focus on renewable energy projects, NIGEL is poised to drive the growth of clean energy solutions,” Mr. Motupalli stated.

As India's energy industry experiences a surge in renewable energy developments, a key area of focus is systems, including Pumped Hydro Systems and Energy Storage Systems. These technological advancements are anticipated to progress hand in hand with the country's renewable energy endeavors, ensuring a sustainable and reliable power supply.

Shri Motupalli referenced the “Optimal Energy Mix Report 2030” from the Central Electricity Authority, Ministry of Power, shedding light on a promising projection. The report suggests that the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity on the grid is set to reach a substantial 41.65 GW, opening the doors to significant opportunities for the expansion of storage system .

NIGEL has set an ambitious target for itself: to establish renewable energy projects with a cumulative capacity of 6 GW by the year 2030. In line with this vision, the company is actively developing projects with a combined capacity of 2 GW in various regions across India, underlining its dedication to advancing the nation's clean energy landscape.

With NIGEL's inception, India's renewable energy sector is poised to take a significant leap forward, aligning with the nation's sustainable energy goals and paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.
