The power project has marked substantial progress, with over 40% of construction now completed, as confirmed by Project Director Leonardo Solis.

This ambitious initiative, located in Liberia, within the province of Guanacaste, occupies the western expanse of the Rincón de la Vieja volcanic massif. Notably, Borinquen I is designed to generate 55 MW of clean energy, and plans are underway for the development of a second 55-MW unit, referred to as Unit 2. The goal is to initiate commercial operations for Borinquen I by 2027.

The extensive construction efforts thus far have included the successful drilling of seven production wells and five reinjection wells, essential components for harnessing the Earth's geothermal energy. Furthermore, the project has seen the establishment of access roads and a crucial water storage lagoon, ensuring the is poised for efficient operation.

Project Director Solis also emphasized that production tests continue, forming a vital part of the field evaluation process. “We have made progress in drilling wells, internal roads, construction of reinjection lagoons, excavation for the Powerhouse and the waste dumps,” Solis stated.

The Borinquen geothermal project is a venture spearheaded by the Costa Rican Institute (ICE), an organization responsible for operating the existing Miravalles and Pailas geothermal power plants. In an era where sustainable energy sources are gaining increasing prominence, geothermal power plays a pivotal role, contributing approximately 15% of 's energy supply.

In a remarkable display of commitment to the environment, ICE has undertaken measures to bolster the ecosystems surrounding the Borinquen geothermal project and its vicinity. The years of development have led to a commendable 4.5% increase in ecological connectivity in the project's proximity, highlighting the broader mission of Costa Rica to balance energy expansion with ecological preservation.

As the Borinquen I geothermal project advances, it not only signifies a substantial leap in sustainable energy generation for Costa Rica but also underscores the nation's unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship and progress.
