Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE) has announced major advancements in its renewable energy portfolio, underlining its drive to be a leading energy provider in the US. These developments encompass wind and solar projects that are poised to substantially bolster clean energy production in the country.
At its GSG Wind facility in Illinois, a capacity of 80MW, LRE has embarked on an ambitious repowering plan. This initiative will see the removal of 40 turbines, making way for 26 state-of-the-art structures. The transition promises improved turbine capacity, enhanced reliability, and superior performance. LRE projects the newly revamped facility to be operational by December 2023, creating around 180 construction jobs in the process. Notably, LRE has pledged a commendable environmental initiative: the complete recycling or reuse of wind turbine blades from the decommissioned turbines.
Simultaneously, LRE has initiated construction at the White Wing Ranch Solar facility in Arizona, a project with an impressive 160MW capacity. It's anticipated to reach completion in the latter half of 2024.
Beyond these developments, there's more positive news from Ohio. The 196MW Big Plain Solar project has achieved commercial operation status, marking yet another feather in LRE's cap.
Adding to the momentum, Verizon Communications has stepped up, inking Renewable Energy Purchase Agreements (REPAs) with LRE for these projects. These agreements reflect the telecommunications giant's proactive approach to sustainability. When combined, these wind and solar endeavors will provide nearly 450MW of green energy, aligning with Verizon's sustainability vision.
In a broader perspective, these ventures align perfectly with LRE's overarching growth strategy. The company has its sights set on a remarkable milestone: achieving roughly 10GW of operational and contracted capacity by 2026.
Jason Allen, LRE's Chief Executive, voiced the company's enthusiasm about these developments and the partnership with Verizon. “LRE is excited to achieve these significant project milestones in tandem with Verizon. Our focus remains steadfast on creating innovative renewable energy solutions, tailoring them to meet our partners' sustainability ambitions,” Allen remarked. “This announcement reaffirms our dedication to facilitating the US's energy transition and positively impacting the communities we serve.
