Technip Energies Secures EPsCm Contracts from Galp for Renewable Fuels in Portugal

Energies disclosed on Oct. 5 that it has secured engineering, procurement services, and construction management (EPsCm) contracts for a (SAF), renewable diesel, and green project in Portugal. The project is being undertaken by SGPS S.A., a leading energy firm in Portugal.

In a previous announcement in September, Galp, in partnership with Japan's Mitsui & Co. Ltd., revealed their intention to establish a joint venture aimed at developing SAF and renewable diesel capabilities at Galp's Sines refinery.

This upcoming biorefinery is projected to have an output capability of 270,000 tons annually, converting waste residue sources like used cooking oil and animal fats into renewable diesel and SAF. Insights from Mitsui suggest the Sines-based biorefinery will possess the flexibility to alternate between producing renewable diesel and SAF.

Parallel to the biorefinery development, Galp is progressing with plans to inaugurate a 100 MW electrolysis facility at the same Sines location, designed to yield up to 15,000 metric tons of renewable hydrogen each year.

will oversee EPsCm tasks for both the renewable fuels and green hydrogen ventures. The company has also indicated a collaboration with Portuguese engineering firm, Technoedif Engenharia, for the renewable fuels initiative. This project is projected to assist Galp in curtailing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 800,000 metric tons yearly. Meanwhile, Plug Power will provide proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers for the green hydrogen unit, anticipating a 20% reduction in current grey hydrogen usage at Sines and a consequent decrease of 110,000 metric tons in annual GHG emissions.

Commenting on the developments, Marco Villa, Technip Energies' COO, stated, “These projects signify a pivotal investment by Galp to reshape the refining landscape in Portugal. Having backed Galp's strategy from the inception of these projects, Technip Energies is honored to transition into the execution phase. This endeavor underlines our commitment to spearheading the energy sector's decarbonization through collaborative and innovative solutions.”
