In a groundbreaking development, trial operations have kicked off for the project within the , situated in the Songyuan district of Jilin province, . This innovative initiative repurposes existing oil wells, specially adapted for production, and signifies the successful establishment of the “zero carbon” demonstration area in the Jilin Oilfield's geothermal model.

Nestled in the Yingtai area of the Jilin Oilfield, which boasts favorable conditions for geothermal energy exploration, Fang 52 stands as the pioneering medium-low permeability geothermal project in this oil-rich region. At present, geothermal production hinges on the Fang 52-02 heat recovery well and the Fang 52-08 reinjection well.

The project's inception began with the pre-qualification of four wells in the Yingtai area, each subsequently undergoing thermal reservoir perforation and rigorous testing. These assessments encompassed heat extraction efficiency, production flowrate, and production temperature across diverse scenarios, alongside measurements for the development of underground heat storage.

Upon the full completion and operational commencement of the Fang 52 geothermal endeavor, it is poised to deliver substantial environmental and economic benefits. Forecasts predict savings of up to 1.41 million cubic meters of natural gas, equivalent to 1.85 million yuan in operating costs. Additionally, it is anticipated to curtail energy consumption by approximately 1,818 tons of equivalent coal.

The Jilin Oilfield, unwavering in its commitment to sustainable practices, aspires to expand geothermal resource utilization within medium to low-permeability reservoirs. This expansion aligns with the overarching mission to amplify waste heat utilization, solidify the construction of zero-carbon demonstration areas, and persist in catalyzing the harmonious integration of new energy solutions with traditional oil and gas industries.

The Fang 52 geothermal project's emergence signifies a monumental stride towards reducing carbon emissions and embracing within the heartland of China's oil production. As trial operations unfold, the world watches with anticipation to witness the ecological and economic advantages this endeavor may yield.
