Repsol has initiated the production of green hydrogen at its Petronor industrial center located in Biscay, Spain. The 2.5MW electrolyzer facility is poised to generate an impressive 350 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, primarily catering to industrial applications within the refinery sector. This green hydrogen will serve as a vital raw material for manufacturing products with substantially reduced carbon footprints.
Green hydrogen produced at this facility also finds utility in the logistics platform of the Abanto Zierbana Technology Park, situated a mere 1.5 kilometers (approximately 9.4 miles) from Muskiz. Here, it powers buses and heavy transport vehicles, marking a noteworthy shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation options.
In response to this promising development, Repsol, in collaboration with the Basque Energy Agency, has established the Basque Country's inaugural hydrogen refueling station at the Abanto Zierbana Technology Park. This station sources its hydrogen directly from the Petronor electrolyzer via a dedicated pipeline, thoughtfully installed by Nortegas.
The commissioning of this 2.5MW electrolyzer marks a pivotal moment in Repsol's journey toward achieving zero net emissions, underscoring the pivotal role that the transformation of industrial facilities plays in this endeavor.
Petronor is poised to become the site for two additional electrolyzers in the coming years, with capacities of 10MW and an impressive 100MW. The latter has garnered recognition from the European Commission as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), highlighting its strategic significance on the European energy landscape.
Repsol's commitment to leveraging electrolyzers for decarbonization extends to its other significant industrial centers in Spain as well. The Cartagena unit is slated to feature a 100MW capacity electrolyzer and has also received IPCEI qualification. Meanwhile, the Tarragona unit, with an impressive 150MW capacity, is poised to become the largest of its kind in Spain and has been selected by the European Commission as an innovative project eligible for funding under the Innovation Fund program.
Repsol's ambitious plans also encompass the installation of 30MW electrolyzers in close proximity to its industrial complexes in Puertollano and A Coruña.
Notably, Repsol currently holds the distinction of being the leading producer and consumer of hydrogen in Spain. The company's existing hydrogen production capabilities stand at approximately 360,000 tons per year within its industrial facilities, accounting for nearly 60% of Spain's total hydrogen demand.
