The Philippines' Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the 4th Open and Competitive Selection Process (OCSP), receiving a total of 25 applications for development rights in 13 out of 20 pre-determined areas (PDAs). These areas hold the promise of harnessing hydropower, geothermal, and wind energy resources.
Among the 20 PDAs offered, three are designated for geothermal resources, with a potential capacity of 169 megawatts (MW). Additionally, 14 PDAs are earmarked for hydropower resources, boasting a combined potential capacity of 87.96 MW. The remaining three PDAs have been identified as suitable for wind energy projects.
Notably, this marks the first instance of wind energy projects being included in the OCSP round, following the completion of resource assessments for wind energy in the region.
The DOE has set an ambitious timeline for the evaluation process, with a target completion date of 12 October. Subsequently, the awarding of contracts to successful applicants is scheduled for 24 November.
The Review and Evaluation Committee is currently engaged in the meticulous review of submitted bids, including motions for reconsideration from four bidders. Among these, two pertain to hydropower projects, and the remaining two are focused on wind energy initiatives.
Pre-determined areas (PDAs) represent locations with significant potential for renewable energy sources that can be developed to bolster the country's energy sector.
