AFRY, the engineering firm, has joined forces with state-owned Interconnect Malta (ICM) to facilitate the process of defining and awarding offshore renewables concessions in the exclusive economic zones of Malta, situated in the Mediterranean Sea.
This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to ensure that the development of clean energy sources takes place in a meticulously regulated, sustainable, and beneficial manner. The initiative aims to address a multitude of crucial aspects, including energy needs, environmental considerations, economic growth, and the imperative of climate change mitigation.
The multifaceted project will be executed by AFRY Management Consulting, in conjunction with AFRY's Energy engineering team, encompassing two pivotal facets: technical and commercial. On the technical front, AFRY will assist the Maltese government in identifying key geographical areas, technologies, network impacts, and development processes.
Simultaneously, the commercial aspects will enable Malta to evaluate the delicate balance between risk and return, alongside pricing strategies. This approach ensures that well-informed business decisions are made, optimal resource allocation is achieved, and alignment with long-term objectives is maintained.
Peter Plug, Vice President and Global Head of Renewable Energy at AFRY, expressed their commitment to Malta's sustainability journey, stating, “We take pride in bringing our interdisciplinary skills to the forefront to support Malta's transition towards sustainability. Our holistic approach, encompassing technical and commercial expertise, positions us as a valuable partner in this strategic project. It's noteworthy that our recent acquisition of BLIX Consulting has significantly bolstered our offshore wind competencies with its unique and specialized expertise, further empowering us to play a pivotal role in Malta's green energy transition.”
Malta, as an EU member state, committed to a non-binding agreement in January 2021 for the deployment of offshore renewables in the south and west offshore grid priority corridor. This ambitious endeavor includes the development of offshore floating clean energy installations within Malta's economic zones.
