Eletrobras has solidified its position in the energy sector by acquiring full ownership of Companhia Hidrelétrica Teles Pires, following the successful conclusion of an asset exchange transaction involving its subsidiary, Eletrobras Eletronorte, and Neoenergia.
Previously, Eletrobras held a 49% stake in the company, but this operation was executed without any cash inflow or outflow, as it involved the exchange of assets.
This strategic move aligns with Eletrobras' goal of streamlining its shareholdings, a key element of the company's strategic planning. The transaction marks a significant step towards corporate optimization for the energy giant. As a result, Eletrobras will divest its shares in Neoenergia Afluente T, Neoenergia Coelba, Neoenergia Cosern, and EAPSA. Simultaneously, it will take full ownership of Companhia Hidrelétrica Teles Pires and acquire a 66% stake in the UHE Baguari Consortium.
Companhia Hidrelétrica Teles Pires is renowned for operating the Teles Pires hydroelectric plant, boasting a capacity of 1.82 GW. This impressive facility, situated on the Teles Pires River, straddles the border between the Brazilian states of Pará and Mato Grosso, with installations in Jacareacanga (PA) and Paranaíta (MT). The run-of-river project reached completion in August 2016, equipped with five turbine-generator units. Its electricity generation capacity is substantial, enough to power a population of 13.5 million people.
Eletrobras, a prominent player in Brazil's energy landscape, currently commands an electric generating capacity of 42,559 MW (as of the fourth quarter of 2022). This capacity represents a substantial 23% of the total installed capacity in the country. Eletrobras' diversified portfolio comprises 35 hydroelectric plants, nine natural gas and coal plants, 20 wind plants, and a solar plant. Impressively, about 97% of the company's capacity is derived from clean energy sources, contributing to low greenhouse gas emissions in its energy generation efforts.
