German logistics giant DHL, in partnership with energy firm HH2E and South African petrochemicals company Sasol, has announced plans to bolster sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in Germany, as reported by HH2E on Monday.
Under the signed agreement, the three companies will establish a joint initiative focused on creating potential production capacities for SAFs derived from green hydrogen, known as eSAFs, in eastern Germany, HH2E stated in a press release. Their objective is to produce a minimum of 200,000 tonnes per year, with the potential to scale up production to 500,000 tonnes annually.

Additionally, aircraft manufacturer Airbus has expressed its intention to become part of the consortium, demonstrating a commitment to utilizing the sustainable jet fuel in their operations, according to the statement.
This collaborative effort coincides with the National Aviation Conference in Hamburg, where German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the significance of expanding SAF production to align with the European Union's climate targets.
The companies involved aspire to establish eSAF production facilities in Germany by the year 2030, the statement revealed. Immediate steps will include specifying the technical and financial aspects, securing financing, and defining the necessary regulatory framework.
