In a significant development announced today in Scotland, the government has unveiled an Onshore Wind Sector Deal aimed at accelerating the approval process for new, larger wind farms. Under this ambitious agreement, the Scottish government seeks to expedite the assessment of applications, striving to reach a decision within a year when no public inquiry is necessary and within two years when an inquiry is required. This streamlined approach aims to cut the average determination time by an impressive 50%, bolstering the renewable energy sector.

The core strategy behind this initiative involves streamlining administrative processes and enhancing the quality and format of wind farm applications. Additionally, the deal introduces a series of commitments designed to augment training and resource allocation while establishing clear guidelines to ensure responsible development, thus enabling positive outcomes for both climate and nature.

One of the noteworthy provisions within this comprehensive deal is the industry's commitment to create apprenticeships, training opportunities, and skilled jobs within Scotland for the entire duration of the agreement. Moreover, developers are directed to engage with local communities at the earliest possible stage, with the aim of reaching an agreement on a community benefits package that aligns with or exceeds the stringent good practice principles set by the Scottish Government.

Crucially, the Onshore Wind Sector Deal also includes a forward-looking commitment to support supply chains in the reuse and refurbishment of components. This strategy aims to establish Scotland as a European hub for recycling and repurposing wind turbine blades, with the ambitious goal of setting up at least one specialist facility dedicated to this purpose by the year 2030.

This historic deal was formally signed at the Scottish Renewables Onshore Wind Conference in , marking a pivotal moment in Scotland's renewable energy journey. It outlines a collaborative effort between the government and the industry to harness the full potential of onshore wind, benefiting local communities, bolstering the economy, and significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Energy Secretary commented on the landmark agreement, stating, “This deal is a practical example of Government and industry working closely together to reinforce our shared commitment to reaching net zero. As we embrace the possibilities, we acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead. Balancing the needs of energy production with proper environmental stewardship demands diligence and continuous innovation. This deal charts a course that safeguards our natural heritage while delivering clean, affordable energy to power our lives and industries. By benefiting communities, we are ensuring the rewards of our onshore wind revolution are shared by all. This helps meet our Programme for government commitments and create a green and growing economy with fairness at its heart.”
