Engie Energy Marketing has entered into an agreement to provide renewable energy to power select Microsoft data centers located in Texas. This collaboration leverages existing renewable energy contracts between the two companies and marks a significant step in Microsoft's commitment to achieving 100% carbon-free energy consumption on an hourly basis by 2030.
Under this tailored agreement, Microsoft, a global tech giant and one of the largest buyers of renewable energy worldwide, will be able to match the energy demand of its data centers in Texas with clean, renewable power. Engie Energy Marketing will source this energy from its extensive portfolio of wind, solar, and battery projects within the state of Texas.
Microsoft has gained recognition as an industry pioneer through its ambitious “100/100/0” initiative, which aims to ensure that 100% of the company's electricity consumption is covered by 100% carbon-free energy purchases, all day, every day, by the year 2030. With this partnership in Texas, Engie Energy Marketing is making a direct contribution to Microsoft's mission to decarbonize the grid.
Engie is uniquely positioned to support Microsoft in achieving this goal, thanks to its holistic approach that encompasses the development and operation of renewable energy generation and storage assets, as well as its expertise in procuring sustainable power through its global energy management activities.
Ken Robinson, President and CEO of Engie Energy Marketing, highlighted Microsoft's leadership in corporate renewable energy procurement and emphasized the strategic importance of this alliance. He stated, “We are proud to help them achieve their ambitions, where many other companies continue to struggle. Our goal is to grow our 24×7 hourly carbon-free matching program in key markets with electricity generated from zero carbon energy sources, including wind and solar.”
