Regolo Rinnovabili, an Italian offshore wind developer and subsidiary of BayWa r.e., has applied for a 30-year maritime concession to construct and operate a 750 MW floating wind farm off the coast of Sicily. The application was submitted to the Port Authority of Mazara del Vallo, outlining plans for approximately 50 wind turbines, each with a nominal power of 15 MW and a rotor diameter of 236 meters. The project also includes the installation of cable and grid infrastructure.
The electricity generated by these wind turbines would be channeled to the Italian grid through two offshore substations. The proposed Mazara Del Vallo 4 wind farm is slated to be situated at a minimum distance of approximately 44 kilometers from the Sicilian coast, covering an area spanning around 226 square kilometers. The total procurement value, excluding VAT, is estimated at EUR 200 million.
Earlier this year, another Italian developer, Mazar Wind Srl, initiated the process by applying for a maritime concession to establish and manage a 1.1 GW floating wind farm located at least 50 kilometers off the coast of Mazara del Vallo.
In February, Ninfea Rinnovabili submitted a maritime concession application for the 750 MW Scicli floating wind farm in the Malta Channel. Following that, the same company submitted another application for a 795 MW floating offshore wind project off the coast of Sicily.
Regolo Rinnovabili is not limiting its ambitions to Sicily alone; the company is also exploring opportunities to construct two floating wind farms off the coast of Sardinia, further bolstering Italy's efforts to expand its renewable energy portfolio.
