In a significant step towards bolstering Finland's energy infrastructure, Glennmont Partners, in collaboration with Nordic power company Ilmatar and Dutch energy solutions specialist Alfen, is set to develop a groundbreaking 30MW battery storage project. Construction for the project commenced in May 2023, and it is expected to begin commercial operation by January 2024.
This innovative venture will harness the expertise of Alfen's TheBattery Elements battery storage system, which has been designed with a modular approach and has the capacity to store 41MWh of energy. The project will be situated in the Pyhäntä region of Central Finland, strategically adjacent to Glennmont's Piiparinmäki onshore wind farm, which has a capacity of 211MW.
The choice of this particular location stems from the close collaboration between Glennmont and Ilmatar. Ilmatar, serving as the technical and commercial management agent for the Piiparinmäki wind farm, brings valuable experience and knowledge to the project. The synergy between the two initiatives will maximize the benefits of both technologies, allowing for optimal utilization of established renewable energy sources.
For Glennmont, renowned for its successful investments in the renewable energy sector, this project signifies its foray into the electricity reserve market. Building upon their recent acquisitions in the Italian solar and Swedish wind markets in 2023, the company is diversifying its portfolio and expanding its presence in Europe.
Francesco Cacciabue, Partner at Glennmont, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaborative endeavor, stating, “We're delighted to be working with Ilmatar and Alfen in the construction of this landmark battery storage facility in Finland.” Cacciabue emphasized the increasing significance of battery technology in Finland and worldwide, as it effectively addresses intermittency challenges and maximizes the potential of renewable energy sources. He further highlighted the advantage of siting the project near the existing Piiparinmäki wind farm, enabling a symbiotic relationship between the two technologies and presenting ample opportunities for investors.
The development of this cutting-edge battery storage facility not only propels Finland's renewable energy ambitions but also underscores the crucial role that energy storage systems will play in the global energy landscape. As countries strive for decarbonization and greater reliance on sustainable energy sources, projects like this pave the way for a cleaner and more resilient future.
