Portugal plans to launch its first offshore wind power auction in the last quarter of this year, with the goal of reaching 10 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity by 2030, according to Prime Minister Antonio Costa.
To begin the process, the government will launch a public hearing this week to propose the delimitation of areas for wind farm deployment off the country's Atlantic coast.
Portugal currently has 7.3 GW of hydroelectric capacity and 5.6 GW of onshore wind, which make up 83% of its total installed capacity.
The country aims to have 80% of its electricity usage come from renewable sources by 2026, an increase from the current 60%, which is already one of the highest ratios in Europe.
