In a significant development, Iberdrola has taken a major step forward in establishing a green hydrogen maritime corridor connecting Spain and the Netherlands. The Executive Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, welcomed His Majesty the King of the Netherlands to the Puertollano plant, where key agreements were signed between Iberdrola, ACE Terminal, and Hynetwork Services.
Galán emphasized that the concept of green hydrogen is not merely a promise but a tangible reality, showcasing Iberdrola's dedication to embracing new technologies and supporting the country's energy sector. He further stressed the company's unwavering commitment to the Single Energy Market as the most effective means of fostering substantial investments required to ensure a secure, clean, and competitive energy industry.
The Puertollano facilities, currently in their initial phase, are slated for significant expansion in the future, with plans to multiply the plant's capacity tenfold. This expansion reflects Iberdrola's ambition to bolster its green hydrogen capabilities and contribute to the energy transition.
Helmie Botter, Hydrogen Business Development Manager at Gasunie, lauded the agreement, emphasizing its role in strengthening the hydrogen corridor linking Spain and the Netherlands. By leveraging import logistics hubs like the Port of Rotterdam and the national hydrogen network of Hynetwork Services—a subsidiary of Gasunie—the Netherlands aims to position itself as the gateway for Northwest Europe in terms of hydrogen distribution.
Through the Dutch national hydrogen network operated by Gasunie's subsidiary, Hynetwork Services, green hydrogen will be transported and distributed in the European market, catering to customers in industries such as chemicals, steel, refining, and fertilizers. This move underscores the growing importance of hydrogen as a clean and versatile energy source across various sectors.
The signing ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including His Majesty the King of the Netherlands, the Netherlands' Minister of Climate and Energy Policy, Robert Jetten, the Secretary of State for Energy, Sara Aagesen, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Spain, Roel Nieuwenkamp, and the Ambassador of Spain to the Netherlands, Consuelo Fermenía Guardiola.
It is worth noting that Iberdrola had previously struck a pivotal agreement with the Port of Rotterdam in December, facilitating the export of green hydrogen and its derivatives to the Netherlands. These strategic collaborations and initiatives reflect the concerted efforts by Iberdrola and its partners to promote the use of sustainable hydrogen and contribute to a greener future.
