German battery manufacturer has taken another step towards optimizing energy consumption and grid stability by integrating heat pumps into its virtual power plant. The company has developed a new software solution that enables smart and grid-friendly operation of heat pumps, contributing to a more stable power grid and reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. By activating the heat pumps during periods of excess electricity supply, Sonnen can effectively balance generation and consumption peaks.

One of the significant advantages of this integration is the potential for households to generate additional income by providing control power. To take advantage of this opportunity, homeowners must enter into an electricity contract with Sonnen. Fortunately, the integration process is hassle-free, as no extra hardware is required. Installers can easily connect heat pumps, along with systems and storage, to the network with a simple click. This streamlined installation process is particularly beneficial for installers with limited resources, making adoption more accessible.

Existing heat pumps that meet specific technical requirements can also be seamlessly integrated into Sonnen's system. The company's initial partner in this endeavor is German heat pump manufacturer NIBE, and further partnerships are expected to follow suit. Oliver Koch, Managing Director of Sonnen, emphasized the essential role heat pumps play in the future's decentralized energy system, facilitating the transition to clean and affordable energy for all.

Through the new software solution, the heat pumps are intelligently controlled to utilize excess power or stored energy for water heating and space heating systems. By tapping into self-generated renewable energy sources, households can reduce their dependence on the power grid. In cases where solar power or stored energy is insufficient, Sonnen's solar community provides additional green power, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply.

Furthermore, during the summer months, heat pumps can efficiently cool homes using solar power, often eliminating the need for additional air conditioning systems. This feature not only enhances comfort but also reduces energy consumption and associated costs, further underscoring the economic and environmental benefits of intelligently integrating power generation and consumption.

Klaus Ackermann, Managing Director of NIBE, highlighted the versatility and advantages of heat pumps, stating, “Heat pumps offer more than traditional heating. Intelligently integrating power generation and consumption allows customers to enjoy maximum comfort at low costs and with minimal environmental impact.”

Sonnen's latest partnership with NIBE and the seamless integration of heat pumps into their virtual power plant demonstrates their commitment to revolutionizing the energy sector. By leveraging innovative software solutions, Sonnen continues to pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, where homeowners can actively participate in grid stability and generate additional income while enjoying the benefits of renewable energy.
