Pertamina Collaborates with Japanese Universities for Indonesia’s Energy Transition Program

PT , the state-owned oil and gas giant, is making preparations to ensure a skilled workforce for the successful execution of 's energy transition program. As part of these efforts, Pertamina University has entered into a collaboration with two prominent Japanese universities, Tokyo University and Kyushu University.

Nicke Widyawati, the President Director of Pertamina, expressed her enthusiasm for the recently signed cooperation agreement during the 28th Nikkei Forum in Tokyo, , on Friday, May 26. This collaboration is seen as crucial in enhancing the capabilities of human resources in line with Pertamina's endeavors to improve its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) rating. Pertamina's ESG rating has shown significant progress, improving from 41.6 (severe) in 2021 to 28.1 (medium), and further advancing to 22.1 (medium) by October 2022.

This commendable ESG rating has positioned Pertamina as the second-ranking integrated oil and gas company worldwide in the Sustainalytics ranking. Pertamina's next step involves focusing on human resource development and reinforcing efforts for energy transition. One of the key initiatives is the establishment of a sustainability academy at Pertamina University and forging collaborations with renowned global universities. The partnership between Pertamina University, Tokyo University, and Kyushu University forms a crucial part of this strategic plan, as stated by Widyawati.

Attending the Nikkei Forum, Pertamina showcased its support and motivation to pursue clean energy initiatives in Indonesia. The international event brought together influential speakers, government leaders, businesspersons, and academics from the Asia-Pacific region, including Pertamina. The discussions primarily revolved around the role of Asian countries in the global landscape.

During the forum, Salyadi Saputra, Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development at Pertamina, emphasized the company's commitment to assist the Indonesian Government in achieving its Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060. Pertamina aims to achieve this target by focusing on asset decarbonization and promoting the development of green businesses.

Widyawati believes that both Indonesia and Pertamina possess immense potential in these two areas. Consequently, Pertamina remains open to establishing partnerships on both domestic and global fronts. She stressed the significance of collaboration between companies, governments, and humanity as a whole to take concrete actions toward ensuring sustainable energy access and safeguarding the climate for future generations.

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, underscored the company's commitment to ESG principles and their integration into every aspect of its operations. This commitment serves as evidence of Pertamina's dedication to becoming an environmentally friendly company and preparing a comprehensive roadmap to support sustainability.
