has officially submitted its Final Needs Case (FNC) to , the energy regulator, outlining plans to upgrade the electricity transmission network in Argyll and Kintyre, Scotland. This proposed upgrade aims to facilitate the integration of new projects in the region, supporting the growth of clean power generation. The investment is crucial for connecting multiple renewable electricity generation schemes and efficiently transmitting the generated power to various areas. It is estimated that the upgrade will enable the connection of over 970 MW of new renewable electricity, enough to supply electricity to more than 500,000 homes.

In addition to promoting the transition to a net-zero emissions future, this investment holds strategic significance for the country's energy independence. By reducing dependence on and exposure to volatile global wholesale gas markets, Scotland aims to secure its own energy future. The deployment of affordable, low-carbon, renewable electricity generation plays a pivotal role in achieving this goal.

Ofgem's decision on SSEN Transmission's Initial Needs Case in December 2022 confirmed that the proposed upgrade is reasonable and likely to provide the optimal solution. Ofgem recognized the robustness of the background generation assumptions underlying SSEN Transmission's Cost Benefit Analysis.

The submission of the Final Needs Case to Ofgem represents the concluding phase in the regulatory approval process for this project. Known as the Argyll and Kintyre Reinforcement Strategy, the plan involves upgrading the electricity transmission network in the area to 275kV. This includes the overhaul of existing overhead lines, construction of new sections, and development of necessary substation .

One key aspect of the strategy is the construction of the Inveraray to Crossaig 132kV overhead line, which is currently in its final stages. This new line will replace the existing wire that is nearing the end of its serviceable life. The upgraded line will operate at 275kV as part of the comprehensive Argyll and Kintyre Reinforcement Strategy.

The implementation of the Argyll and Kintyre Reinforcement Strategy is expected to create numerous job opportunities, benefiting the local community and the wider economy. This project will not only support hundreds of skilled jobs during the construction phase but also stimulate the supply chain and contribute to the growth of the national economy.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the submission, Rob McDonald, the managing director of SSEN Transmission, emphasized the importance of upgrading the Argyll and Kintyre network. He highlighted the project's significance in enabling renewable electricity growth, while simultaneously improving network reliability in Argyll. McDonald sees the submission of the Final Needs Case as a promising step toward gaining Ofgem's approval for the project. SSEN Transmission is committed to engaging constructively with Ofgem and stakeholders as they work towards delivering the much-needed reinforcement to the GB grid, ultimately contributing to Scotland's journey towards a net-zero network in the north of the country.
