In a significant development for in Durham, England, Aura Power's appeal for the Hawthorn Pit Farm has been granted planning permission, paving the way for a sustainable future.

The decision, made by the Planning Inspectorate, carefully weighed the environmental impact and benefits of the project. It concluded that the solar farm would not only enhance biodiversity and ecology in line with development plan policies but also align with the imperative to combat climate change. The Planning Inspectorate recognized the scheme's substantial contribution to tackling climate change, surpassing any identified harm to landscape character.

Once operational, the Hawthorn Pit Solar Farm, with a capacity of 49.9MW, will generate clean electricity to power over 17,000 homes annually. This sustainable energy production will save approximately 15,000 tonnes of carbon emissions compared to gas-generated electricity.

Moreover, the decision acknowledges the inclusion of a comprehensive Biodiversity Plan within the scheme. The plan incorporates significant tree planting and hedgerow initiatives, projected to deliver an impressive Biodiversity Net Gain of 124% for habitats and 135% for hedgerows.

Expressing his satisfaction with the outcome, Aura Power's Chief Executive, Simon Coulson, highlighted the substantial benefits that the project will bring. Coulson noted that the development aligns with Durham County Council's commitment to combat climate change, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 60% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Coulson further emphasized Aura Power's dedication to working closely with the local community and solidifying the administration of the community benefit fund. Aura Power's community benefit fund, available across its UK solar sites, aims to support local initiatives focusing on social, educational, and environmental projects.

Although construction dates for Hawthorn Pit are yet to be determined, this project forms part of Aura Power's broader UK solar portfolio, totaling around 120MW, awaiting planning decisions. As Aura Power celebrates its 10th year in the industry, it continues to demonstrate remarkable success, having secured planning approval for 440MW of solar and battery storage projects in the UK alone. The company's ambitious plans include a 20GW of solar PV and battery energy storage projects in the UK, Europe, and , solidifying its commitment to global renewable energy expansion.
