Renantis, a renewable energy company, has recently inked a groundbreaking Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with global tech giant Amazon. Under this agreement, Amazon will serve as the off-taker for the energy generated by two of Renantis' upcoming onshore wind farms in Finland.
Located in Karstula, Central Finland, the Mustalamminmäki and Koiramäki wind farms are set to become operational in the near future. Together, they are expected to produce an impressive 174GWh of electricity annually, which is equivalent to the energy needs of approximately 20,000 households.
This PPA solidifies Amazon's pivotal role as the recipient of the renewable energy generated by Renantis' wind farms. As the first wind farms developed by Renantis in Finland, these projects will play a crucial role in decarbonizing the energy supply for Amazon's corporate offices, fulfillment centers, and Amazon Web Services' data centers. Renantis' CEO, Toni Volpe, expressed pride in their contribution to Amazon's sustainability objectives, stating, “We are proud of our contribution to Amazon's sustainability goals by powering their business with our renewable energy.”
Lindsay McQuade, the Director of Energy at Amazon, emphasized the significance of the Mustalamminmäki and Koiramäki wind farms in fulfilling Amazon's commitment to combat climate change and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. McQuade highlighted the efficacy of Power Purchase Agreements in facilitating investments to decarbonize electricity grids. “We're on track to power our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of our original 2030 target,” McQuade added.
The Mustalamminmäki and Koiramäki wind farms, with a combined expected capacity of 59MW, are currently under construction and are projected to commence commercial operations by the end of 2023. In addition to their positive environmental impact, these developments have also signed community benefit agreements. These agreements aim to support the local association Karstulan Kiva in fostering cultural, sports, and social activities for the community.
The partnership between Renantis and Amazon serves as a remarkable example of collaboration between businesses and power producers, aligning their objectives to promote sustainability. Both companies recognize the importance of long-term contracts for both energy producers and buyers in their shared commitment to building a cleaner and greener planet.
