Lithuania's State Energy Regulatory Council has received two bids in its inaugural offshore wind tender, marking a significant step forward in the country's renewable energy ambitions. The tender, which ran from March 31 to May 29, 2023, focused on identifying a suitable location for a wind farm with a capacity ranging from 580MW to 700MW.
The successful bidders will progress to the next phase if they meet the stipulated requirements, which involve the development fee for the offshore wind projects. The announcement of the winner is anticipated to take place in September 2023, signaling a major milestone in Lithuania's journey towards sustainable energy.
In an effort to bolster its renewable energy portfolio, Lithuania plans to construct two wind farms in the Baltic Sea. Each farm is expected to have a capacity of 700MW, effectively meeting approximately half of the nation's current electricity demand. This initiative not only demonstrates Lithuania's commitment to reducing its reliance on electricity imports but also positions the country as a frontrunner in the transition to clean energy sources.
Looking ahead, Lithuania is set to launch the second tender for an offshore wind project in the autumn of this year. This signifies the country's determination to further harness the potential of its coastal resources and continue making strides towards a greener and more sustainable future.
