Nucor, the largest steel producer and scrap recycler in the US and North America, has announced plans to manufacture a sustainable steel plate for the offshore wind industry.
The product, named Elcyon, is being touted as the “world's most sustainable steel plate” and the only plate steel in offshore wind sizes that is melted and manufactured in the US.
Elcyon is made using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology and has a recycled content in excess of 90%, with greenhouse gas emissions one-fifth the global blast furnace average. The steel will be manufactured at Nucor's new $1.7 billion steel mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky.
CEO Leon Topalian stated that by launching Elcyon at Brandenburg, the company has effectively created the first domestic supply chain of sustainable steel for the US offshore wind energy industry.
The Biden administration's $300 billion investment in clean energy development is expected to result in an additional demand for 7.5 million tons of steel.
