DSD Renewables and Home Depot have announced a partnership to install 13 MW of solar power capacity on 25 Home Depot stores in California. The solar panels are expected to generate 17 million kWh of clean energy annually, and this collaboration brings DSD Renewables' total number of Home Depot stores with solar power to 98.
DSD is collaborating with Home Depot to expand the use of solar energy in several states, including New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, and Massachusetts, with plans to also implement projects in Arizona, California, Illinois, and New York.
The goal of these efforts is to support Home Depot's commitment to sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2030, enough to power all of its facilities.
Big box stores, such as Home Depot, have a large potential for generating electricity through rooftop solar systems. According to a report by Environment America, over 100,000 big box retail stores in the U.S. have the potential to generate 84.4 TWh of electricity annually through solar, enough to power 8 million homes.
These systems could potentially produce half of the annual electricity usage of these stores, not including systems installed on parking lot canopies or warehouse rooftops. Among big box retailers, Walmart has the most available rooftop space, followed by Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Kroger, Albertsons, and Macy's.
