Irish renewable investment company Greencoat Renewables and UK-based investment manager Schroders Greencoat have launched a green digital infrastructure platform through a joint venture aimed at supporting energy-intensive digital projects in Ireland.
The platform, established through Schroders Greencoat’s SCSL Global Energy Infrastructure vehicle, will make an initial investment in the development of the Drogheda Energy Park. The site is located in Drogheda, around 40 km north of Dublin.
The partners plan to transform the brownfield industrial area near Drogheda Port into an integrated energy park combining flexible on-site generation, energy storage and advanced grid services. The facility is expected to supply renewable energy to an initial 36-megawatt data center development through corporate power purchase agreements.
The companies said the project is currently in the advanced stages of planning consent, though further details on the development timeline have not yet been disclosed.
“There is an exciting opportunity in integrating data center demand with renewable energy generation to support the rapid growth of AI-driven digital infrastructure,” said Paul O’Donnell, investment manager at Schroders Greencoat. “Building on our track record in renewable energy generation, Drogheda Energy Park represents a logical next step for our business and a blueprint for future investment opportunities.”
The joint venture will focus on projects where grid connectivity, land availability and energy infrastructure can be combined to support growing demand from digital infrastructure operators.
“Ireland is at the start of the next digital infrastructure investment cycle, supported by innovative new government policy,” O’Donnell added. “AI-driven demand for data centers, combined with the need to deliver sustainable energy solutions to support the national grid, calls for trusted, experienced operators who can deliver on Ireland’s energy needs at scale.”
Greencoat Renewables currently manages a portfolio of around 40 energy assets, largely consisting of wind power projects with a combined capacity of approximately 1.5 gigawatts. Although headquartered in Ireland, the company operates across several European markets, including France, Germany, Finland, Spain and Sweden.
Schroders Greencoat, based in London, acquired a 75% stake in Greencoat Renewables in 2022 as part of its strategy to expand investments in energy transition infrastructure.
